How Linux Hosting Differs From Windows Hosting

For every website to run all its scripts and applications, servers are required. That’s what hosting is. The servers can be either Windows or Linux servers. Web hosting Dubai offers many hosting packages depending on user requirements and the applications they would be running on the site.

Although both Linux and Windows hosting are popular, Linux hosting servers are more widely used and preferred owing to Linux being a robust, open-source OS with a great file system. It also has a large community of users you can rely on for technical support.

Main Differences

Console

Linux comes with CLI console which requires lesser memory compared to the GUI console in Windows.

Control panel

Linux has the advantage here as well as it is open source. Many open source control panels are available, to manage hosting. Windows also supports many control panels. But not as much as Linux.

Application language

Linux is more preferred when it comes to PHP applications. Languages like PERL and Python works only with Linux, while ASP.NET applications use Windows.

Database

Linux uses MySQL whereas Windows work with MSSQL.

Security

Iptables, TCP_wrapper etc are just a few of the many levels of security provided by Linux, while Windows security is just in the form of firewall.

When it comes to application level security, Linux has firewalls that protect the website. Windows servers do not have that level of security in the application level.

The better option?

It depends on the user requirements and the execution speed of applications. Considering the fact that majority of the applications are presently developed in PERL, Python, PHP, Java etc. Linux is obviously the apt choice as it provides reliable security to and faster execution for the applications.
